This workshop will introduce you to the basic hands-on skills,

The workshop is suitable for anyone with little or no experience of leatherwork, during the course you'll be taught leatherworking skills, you'll be able to make a leather belt adding your personal touch

You will learn how to cut and prepare the leather strap accurately and use decorative tooling, hand dyeing and finishing. Techniques covered are about belt hardware and how it is fitted.

Small class sizes and plenty of hands-on opportunities mean that students come away with a finished belt and will have practised a variety of techniques with emphasis on hands-on application such as:

  •      cutting leather straps
  •      bevelling leather
  •      burnishing and creasing cut edges
  •      attaching rivets or Chicago screws
  •      skiving leather
  •      edge staining
  •      punching holes and slots
  •      making and fitting keepers 
  •      finishing and polishing

By the end of the course, you'll have learnt:

  • about different types of leathers and their different uses 
  • about various tools, materials and techniques
  • how to cut and hole punch vegetable tanned leather
  • how to personalise or pattern leather by stamping patterns
  • how to edge finish and polish edges

Internationally recognised for her talent and contribution to the leather industry, Cherryl has been perfecting her craft for more than 30 years. An exceptional leather artisan and tutor, President of the Lerafters Association of Queensland, and Director of Exquisite Leather, this Brisbane based Leather Artisan has travelledextensively sharing her skills.

You might like to know, Cherryl is the only Australian to be presented with the prestigious Al Stohlman Award outside of the U.S.!

This prestigious annual award honors the accomplishments of individual leather artist’s worldwide. It is given to one who has demonstrated continued dedication to the industry following the example set by Al Stohlman the world’s most talented, best known and respected leather artist. 

Cherryl has also coordinated the largest event for Leather Crafters (of all skill levels) in Australia, Dimensions in Leather conferences held in Brisbane since 1998.
